Q. Does the Museum sell stamps?

A.The Museum does not sell stamps.

Q. I would like to know the value of old banknotes, stamps, or foreign banknotes.

A.The Museum does not appraise old banknotes and others. Please ask your nearest numismatist.

Q. Are there any coins on display?

A.The National Printing Bureau, which in charge of the Museum, manufactures banknotes and stamps but not coins. Therefore, the Museum does not have coins.

The following organizations contain coin exhibits at their museums:

  • Currency Museum, Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies, Bank of Japan
  • Mint Museum in Osaka and Saitama Mint Museum, the Japan Mint

Q. Can I take pictures in the Museum?

A.The Banknote and Postage Stamp Museum allows visitors to take pictures.

  • However, pictures taken should strictly be for personal use. Please note that there are some areas where photography is prohibited, so please follow the instructions.
  • When taking photos, please be careful not to violate other persons’ rights and/or disturb other visitors.
  • Photography using equipment such as selfie sticks, monopods, tripods, etc., and using flash, significant close-up photography, and video and audio recording are prohibited.
  • An application is required if you are clicking photos for publication, research, or other programs.

Guidelines for photography at the Banknote and Postage and Stamp Museum

  • Photography is allowed but only for personal use, except in some areas.
  • The symbol given below is displayed at “No Photography” areas.
