“Samples of Trial Design Postage Stamp,” materials promoting Japan’s techniques to foreign markets

Image of collections

This is a collection of trial postage stamps produced by the Printing Bureau in the thirties of the Showa era (the latter half of the 1950s to the first half of the 1960s) to promote its techniques to the world in an attempt to win orders from foreign countries as a new business venture.
The Printing Bureau focused on overseas markets because the volume of the banknotes produced was declining at the time, and also because of the advantages of contributing to technical refinement, international friendship, and the acquisition of foreign currency.
The sample collection contains six trial stamps each with intaglio and gravure printing, and all notations were written in English.
